Stanford University LUG Meeting

Happened to attend the Stanford University LUG meeting today.
The meeting began at about 6:50. The LUG coordinator asked the crowd ( which numbered a double digit number) to share any slashdottable news.
The scheduled talk was by David Allen who is a co-author of
Windows to Linux migration Toolkit on the same topic as name of the book.
He explained at length the various migration steps for a Windows to Linux migration in steps taking examples of a small sized corporation and a mid-sized multi-location company. He devlved deep into the various issues involved in Authentication, FileServers, Messaging and Desktop Migrations. He honestly answered questions about what works better on linux and what is windows users might miss when they migrate.
Interestingly one of the reasons in the "hypothetical" case study Allen presented for why "Acme Widgets- a small single location company" wanted to migrate was because the person who setup their infrastructure happened to overlook the licensing requirements for their infrastructure. The reason why the bigger corporation wanted to migrate was because they wanted to create cheaper and more reliable global infrastructure (read - for their Bangalore Office ). He then went on to explain what it takes to plan for a backend ( network services ) and desktop migration. He also mentioned in passing the reason to migrate is not only to lower the total cost of ownership but also to loosen the grip of a monopoly on company "X's" infrastructure.
The food and drinks were available in plenty ( the organizers mentioned about some meeting that took place before the LUG meet ). The building in which the meet actually happened ironically happened to be named after some rich dude called "Gates" ;-) who donated some big bucks for its construction.
Of course I should you spare you some details on Linux to Windows migration afterall aren't most people familiar with it already. And what could be better than a book mentioned.
Based on David's presentation my guess is that this book is a good resource for a windows admin ( familiar with Unix ) for getting into the virus and worm free world of linux.
