Why 10 digit mobile numbers in India and 11 digits in China

Have you ever been pissed when your telephone number has had to be changed. China a country with similar population has 11 digit mobile numbers while India has 10 digit mobile numbers. Is it timidity of the "planners" or failure of regulatory authorities. Its the usual story everywhere, freeways, electricity generation, bandwidth, telecom, urban growth, sewerage the trends visible to the rest of the populace somehow miss the bureaucrats in their ivory towers.

Future of vanity numbers....

I had taken a fancy number last year. Paid as much as Rs.35,000. They told me this number would be retained for another 20 years. Now what? TRAI should refund my money with interest or I’ll have to consider legal options.

Stop this chaos!

A horrible insight. these are only to create caos among the 350+ million users. Stop reseving 92,93 & 94 codes for the heavy weights. also, cancel mobile numbers wich are not used for more than 6 months. You will get far enough numbers than what will be required in next 5 years. more than 30% of our people are living in Below Poverty Live and another 40% in villages. how can't we make proper usage of the existing numbering scheme??? Think & Act.

just like that

BTW, when 10 digit can accommodate 10 billion numbers, why do we need to go for 11 digit. I am not sure why China did that? Even if every Tom dick and harry owns phones in this world, 10 billion or 1000 crores would not reach....

China-TechnoPhreak!

well this may be attributed to more of mobile phone users in china as compared to india.A major portion of our population does not use mobile phones

it is not a big problem

cell phone having 10 digit is not a big problem. by the time we reach 1 billion connections something better than cell phone will come and cell phone usage will decrease same like landline usage have decreased. so dont worry

I didn't get it

What point are you trying to make? I missed it.

We live in an artificial scarcity

India has a similar population as China. On the face of it it looks like 10 digits should be sufficient for a billion phones and we'll never hit a billion phones in India. But a few digits actually being used to identify mobile(9), operator or circle so we practically have only a fraction of the billion numbers available right now. And if mobile is actually very successful(say 500 million+ mobiles) then we'll soon run out of numbers and it would require an extremely painful renumbering and a huge loss to businesses.
You can get similar examples of such shoddy planning in every area in the Indian government's functioning.
Take urban renewal for example, is the government planning for 900million people living in cities or the government thinks people would forever live in villages and forever commit themselves to subsistence farming.

We can still have 999.999

We can still have 999.999 million ( one less than 1 billion) mobile numbers with 10 digits. and after that is over, we can start having mobile numbers starting from 8 or 7 or so on..

10 digits => total of 10 billion numbers..so worry not

Ah I see

You are talking about the short-sightedness and narrow-mindedness of govt. officials, I get it! Yes, it is a sad situation we are in...
